Infrared sauna vs traditional sauna: what the difference actually is

Two cabins, two different physics, and a body of long-term evidence that sits almost entirely on one side of the comparison.

The comparison usually gets framed as a contest, with infrared cast as the modern, gentler option and Finnish sauna as the traditional, punishing one. That framing is mostly a marketing artefact. The two cabins heat you through different physics, they produce different experiences, and the research behind them sits in very different places, which is worth knowing before spending several thousand euros on either.


How each one heats you

A traditional sauna heats the air, and the hot air then heats you. Electric or wood-burning stoves bring a room to somewhere between 70 and 100°C, water poured over the rocks produces a burst of steam that raises the perceived temperature sharply, and your skin warms from the outside in. The sensation is immediate and intense, and most people last somewhere between eight and twenty minutes per round.

An infrared cabin heats you rather than the room. Infrared wavelengths are absorbed by tissue directly, so the air can sit at 45 to 65°C while your core temperature still rises. Manufacturers often claim penetration of four to five centimetres, though independent measurement of that figure is thinner than the marketing implies. What is reliably true is that a lower air temperature is easier to tolerate, which is why infrared sessions typically run 20 to 40 minutes rather than ten.

Where the evidence actually sits

This is the part most comparisons skip, and it cuts against the way infrared is usually sold. The strongest long-term health data on sauna comes from Finland, where large cohort studies followed thousands of middle-aged men over two decades and found that frequent traditional sauna use was associated with lower cardiovascular mortality, with the association strengthening as weekly frequency rose. Those studies were conducted on conventional Finnish saunas, not infrared cabins.

Research on infrared specifically is younger, smaller and mostly focused on short-term outcomes such as blood pressure, perceived recovery and pain scores. The findings are broadly encouraging, but nobody has followed infrared users for twenty years, so anyone telling you infrared is proven to extend life is extending someone else's data to a device it was not collected on.

Practically this matters less than it sounds, because both cabins do the same underlying thing, which is to raise core temperature and drive the cardiovascular and circulatory response that most of the benefit appears to flow from. The route differs and the destination is similar.

On sweating and detox

Infrared is frequently marketed on the claim that its sweat contains more heavy metals and toxins than the sweat produced by a traditional sauna. The evidence for that is weak. Sweat is overwhelmingly water and electrolytes, and the organs that clear metabolic waste are your liver and kidneys, both of which work at the same rate whether or not you are sitting in a hot box.

What sweating does reliably is cool you, which is the point of it. Feeling clearer and lighter after a session is real, and it comes from vasodilation, parasympathetic shift and the simple fact of sitting still for half an hour rather than from any measurable purge. The same applies to claims about calorie burn, which is modest and not a serious weight-loss mechanism in either cabin.


Which suits recovery better

For recovery specifically, infrared has a practical advantage that has nothing to do with wavelengths, which is that you can tolerate it more often. A 25 minute session at 55°C is something most people will do four times a week without dreading it, whereas 90°C tends to become an occasional event. Since consistency drives almost all of the benefit here, the cabin you will actually use several times a week is the better recovery tool, whichever one that is.

What each one is better at

Traditional sauna gives you the higher cardiovascular load, the steam, and the cultural experience that a great many people are actually buying when they buy a sauna. Löyly, the burst of steam off hot rocks, has no infrared equivalent, and if that is the thing you enjoy then no amount of technical specification will substitute for it.

Infrared gives you lower running costs, a much shorter warm-up, easier installation in an apartment, and a temperature most people can sit in for long enough to relax properly. For heat-sensitive users, for anyone with a low tolerance for high temperatures, and for daily use, it is the more sustainable of the two.

Choosing between them

Choose traditional if you want high heat and steam, if the ritual matters to you, if you have the space and the electrical supply, and if you are likely to use it two or three times a week as an event rather than a habit.

Choose infrared if you want to use it most days, if extreme heat is unpleasant or medically inadvisable for you, if you are installing it in a flat or a spare room, and if lower running costs matter over a decade of ownership.
